Photography expresses the beauty of life captured, and no one captures beauty quite like world renowned fine art photographer Alan S. Maltz. Maltz, originally from Brooklyn, has called the Keys home for over 42 years. Maltz along with his wife, Leslie, own and operate the Alan S. Maltz Gallery, at 1210 Duval St. in the heart of Old Town Key West.
“We bought the building in 1993 and were leasing it out for a few years,” Maltz explains. “After a few years, my wife and I made a decision to open our own gallery. We specifically renovated the space for a gallery and after our tenants left in 1998, we officially opened our doors in January of 1999. Then in 2004 we built the upstairs area, which almost doubled our space.”
The moment you set foot into Maltz’s fine art gallery, you’re greeted by friendly and knowledgeable team members, who graciously welcome you into the space and tell visitors the story of each piece. The gallery is inviting and not pretentious. The photos on the walls are a tribute to Maltz’s career as an artist — a visual journal, if you will. From birds in their natural habitat in the Everglades to mystical sunsets in South Florida, Maltz has an eye for capturing timeless images. You would never believe this psychology major turned photographer never professionally studied or took a photography class.
