Art On Duval II Key West
602 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040
Artist Pam Hobbs
I was born in northern New Jersey and moved to Kansas when I was 13. I attended High school and then received my B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute. I was trained as a weaver in the craft department and used fabric, either woven or surface design as my medium. After college, forty years ago, I came to Key West Florida on vacation and never left. After seeing the colors of the water, sky and the tropical flowers and trees my colors blossomed, as well as my use of different mediums. I like to portray my ideas and feelings with bright colors and bold shapes. I also like to give people the same directness, boldness, freedom and happiness I feel living here in the lush tropics. I live on the beautiful island of Key West.
Pam Hobbs was born in Northern New Jersey and moved to Kansas when she was 13 years old. Luckily, her high school teachers encouraged her imagination, and she later attended the Kansas City Art Institute. Pam was trained as a weaver in the craft department and used fabric, either woven or surface design as her medium.
Over 40 years ago, in 1976, she moved to Key West and never left. Living in Key West and riding her bicycle to and from, she is inspired everyday by life’s pleasures such as the intensely vibrant colors of magenta bougainvillea against a sapphire sky. Immersed in constantly stimulating muses of “color, architecture, people, freedom to be who you want to be, one human family where everyone is always smiling” she wishes to impress this lifestyle through her work.
Thousands of people see her work everyday while perambulating Duval Street, an optimally prime location she earned over the course of thirty years. It started when she was pregnant with her first child; her husband advised her to do some cottage work such as selling her painted, wooden fish. She set out and stumbled upon a shop where the owner sold local artwork. There were no galleries then as there are today, they were more like co-operatives where artists joined together to sell their craft. This is how Pam started her journey in the art world to become one of the most recognized talents that Key West has to offer.
