Katharine Doughty Key West Artist

I hold a BA in fine art from Hampshire College. I work in painting, drawing, printmaking, art jewelry, ivory free scrimshaw, poetry, and movement. For ten years my work focused on landscape. In 1999, while attending massage therapy school, my focus shifted to figure. I began a series of self portraits inspired by the alphabet which became the 18 year project "In My Own Language". In 2015, following my third round of cancer treatment, I relocated to California to study with mentors Anna and Daria Halprin. I offer expressive arts education and therapy to individuals and groups and work on a second long term project "Finding The Ocean": a 365 piece series of found object jewelry with illuminated journal pages. I returned to Key West in 2022 and am honored to bring forward my art and experience to inspire and assist others.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
Doughty’s series of alphabet self-portraits began with an “A” in 1999 and finished with a “Z” in 2017. The complete series shows an exploration of personal mythology, archetypes, and the differences between writing and visual imagery.

While the majority of the pieces were executed directly from a mirror, later pieces are more imaginative and include multiple figures which are not herself. Along the way, the project became a meditation on and documentation of the passage of time.
